Technology Domination!

Do you constantly check your phone to see if you've received a text or missed a phone call? Are you jumbled in a mess of notifications from your iPhone, Facebook account and email? People are wired to technology now more than ever, it is evident in our daily lives and people are talking about it.

Most of the blog posts I’ve read pertaining to this topic use a demeaning tone and evoke emotion to persuade readers to rethink the way technology is used. In Hunter Costley’s ‘Is Technology Taking Over?’ he appeals to the readers through logos and the use of statistical records. “An article by the New York Times in 2010 cited that over half of American teenagers ranging from ages 12-17, sent at least 50 text messages a day and over one third sent 100 text messages a day..” he says, adding to his idea that people are changing the way that they learn, speak and interact.

In a similar blog post, Sam Bowden, another fellow blogger, appeals to his audience through diction and clever word choice. “Smart phones are getting smarter and smarter while people get lazier and lazier.” Through the use of personal anecdotes and witty expressions, Bowden is able to get his point across using the Aristotelian appeal of ethos. Just remember, he says, “technology can’t solve everything.”

Technology may be changing, but should we be changing with it?

  1. Good points, this is a popular debate right now. It seems to me that technology and its applications cause lots of divisions among us.

  2. I agree that technology has been consuming the world lately, and although I will agree that there are positive outcomes there are as well negative ones that follow. Technology has made many advances in medicine and society that are fantastic and push society forward. Phones that are mobile have made it easier for us to communicate with each other and experience things from afar. Though I would say we are changing almost a little too much with it, for instance, an app that turns the lights of, that's a little too much dependence and just plain laziness if you can't even get up to turn out the lights yourself. Although it may be beneficial for some, and in that case they should use it greatly, it's still showing the increasing laziness that comes with increase technology. We as a people shouldn't lose touch with each other and rely just on a screen and meme's to make us laugh, we still need people, technology will never replace that void, it can make certain things easier, but we shouldn't let it completely consume and replace important things.

  3. I agree with Ace as far as moderation goes. Technology is a thing that can be taken advantage of in many ways, good and bad. Kudos to you if you can use your smart phone to send an important email from your seat in class right before lecture starts. Shame on you if your smart phone is still out later in class while the teacher is talking and you're just sitting there on twitter.
